Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente on March 19 broke ground on an 18-acre hospital campus in Sacramento.

At the heart of the campus will be an eight-story, 662,050-square-foot hospital featuring 310 beds, 14 operating rooms, a 70-bay emergency department, an intensive care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, and labor, delivery, and postpartum care services. Adjacent to the hospital will be a five-story, 173,000-square-foot medical office building with 66 exam rooms.

The campus will offer both primary and specialty care, including Kaiser Permanente’s advanced neuroscience center.

“This new facility will bring essential medical services to the city’s core for the first time,” Jay Robinson, senior vice president and area manager, Kaiser Permanente Sacramento, said in a news release. “Breaking ground on our future medical center today will have a transformative effect on downtown Sacramento’s economic vitality and provide our members and patients greater access to high-quality care and service for generations to come.”

The hospital campus, which is expected to cost about $1 billion, is slated to open in 2029.
