A Massachusetts hospital is merging with UMass Memorial Health System and a rural North Carolina hospital is joining Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.
Here is more information about the two hospital M&A moves Becker’s reported during the week of July 7:
1. Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Health System’s UMass Memorial Medical Center — also in Worcester — received approval from the Massachusetts Public Health Council to bring Marlborough (Mass.) Hospital onto its medical license through a corporate merger.
Marlborough Hospital, a 79-bed facility, was previously a UMass Memorial Health corporate affiliate under its own medical license.
The health system said in a statement that under a single, coordinated clinical team, “Marlborough patients will gain greater access to community-based specialty care and specialty consults, cutting-edge technologies, and tertiary services available through the Medical Center — keeping more care local.”
2. Elkin, N.C.-based Hugh Chatham Health joined Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, which will invest $100 million in its newest member.
Hugh Chatham Health includes an 81-bed acute care hospital, a medical group with more than 70 providers across 25 locations, a home healthcare division and joint ventures in a critical access hospital and hospice/palliative care organization.
Hugh Chatham Health Board of Trustees Chairwoman Cynthia Gonzalez said that “Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s deep commitment and experience with serving rural communities like Elkin was one of the key drivers of our decision to select them as our partner.”
